Alaskan Republic Edit
The Alaskan Republic is one of the major factions to come out of what was the United States after the Yellowstone caldera erupted. The military for the Alaskan Republic is the Alaskan Highlanders. It was formed roughly during 1PEY (Post eruption year) by the Alaskan State Government and the residents of Alaska. The Alaskan Republic holds territory in Alaska, Yukon Territory, and most of British Columbia and patrols the trade routes in the Pacific Northwest heavily keeping them more or less free of raiders. They have dominance over the Pacific-Northwest and most of western Canada.
Post Ash-Fall Edit
When news hit that the Yellowstone Caldera erupted, the state government of Alaska worked swiftly to save as much infrastructure as possible. The US army units in Alaska, the Alaskan national Guard, and the Alaskan Self-Defense Force were all deployed to keep order in the major towns and cities, where people were more dependent upon food from the lower 48. After a massive program to erect massive greenhouses throughout the state, the issue of keeping the state fed was solved and the military withdrew after order was restored.
Formation of the ASDF Edit
After the food crisis of 1PEY, the Government decided to combine the US army units and the Alaskan National Guard into one, easier to maintain and co-ordinate force that would be known as the Alaskan Self Defense Force (ASDF). Part of this was taking the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team and turning it into the Alaskan Highlanders, which would become the spear tip and special forces of the Alaskan Republic (and would later become one of the most feared fighting forces in the Grey). With an easier to maintain and sizable force at it's disposal, the Alaskan Republic looked outwards
The Alaskan Highway Campaign Edit
The Alaskan Highway campaign was a campaign by the Alaskan Republic to secure the Alaskan Highway, the main roadway leading from Alaska to the lower 48 states. The Alaskan Highlanders took Whitehorse and a majority of the Yukon Territory within days of the campaigns start, partly due to the remoteness of the Yukon and the re-establishment of order with the Alaskan Highlanders arrival. When the Highlanders and ASDF forces crossed down into British Columbia, they were met with a much different story. What remained of the Canadian Military was in a desperate and pitched battle with multiple raider tribes that sprang up across the province. After four months of fighting it's way down the province, they decided to stop just north of Vancouver, not wanting to enter a metropolis and get caught in urban warfare for what they estimated would have lasted months on end to secure the whole city..
Alaska's Roll in the Ashland Edit
The Alaskan Republics main roll in the Ashland today is to maintain the trade routes through the Pacific Northwest and keep raiders off the Alaskan Highway and away from the City-State of New Venice. They have good relations with most factions, with an alliance with New Venice and the T.E.F. There has yet to be reports of Alaskan Highlander patrols east of the Mississippi River so it's easy to say it seems they want to keep their patrols and rule to the West of what was the United States.
Long Lasting Problems Edit
Resources and Fuel Edit
Even though the republic is rich in natural resources and has the infrastructure to move said resources, before the eruption and even now the republic has issues refining these raw materials into the refined products it needs to keep its economy going. Many claim one of the main reasons for the Highway Campaign was to simply take and secure the oil refineries at Prince George, British Columbia and the few other refineries along the highway near the Albertan border, which were equipped to refine crude oil into gasoline, diesel, propane, and other much needed fuels. Rationing of gasoline and other fuels used to power automobiles, planes, and boats has been a thing in the Republic since the Yellowstone eruption occurred. With the securing of the refineries the rationing has eased up over time and is expected to end in the next 15 years due to increased infrastructure to and from the oil fields in the arctic and the refineries in British Columbia.
After the eruption there was an explosion of piracy in the waters of the Pacific Northwest and Puget sound and the Salish Sea. The crafts used range from modified fishing trawlers, Ferries, fast craft, and in a few cases cargo ships and old military vessels. From the very beginning up to about 10 PA, the Alaskan government could do nothing to protect fishermen and traders who went out onto the waters of South East Alaska. It was in late 10 PA when the Government turned its focus on securing the water ways of the South East and the routes down to Victoria, BC and the newly formed Camp Lighthouse in Washington. The ASDFs brown water navy during the early campaign was bolstered when the Government formed the maritime militia where volunteers and their crafts would help patrol their local waters to seek out, engage, and take out pirates in their local areas. Currently there are only small groups of Pirates that remain in the South Eastern Alaskan area, but pirates are much more active in the southern Salish Sea especially around New Vegas.
